Exciting times are ahead, especially now that the complete casting has been announced for the new Broadway musical Anastasia. The new musical, which is based on the popular 1997 animated film, will make its Broadway debut on March 23 at the Broadhurst Theatre—and I’ve got a ticket!
From the Tony Award®-winning creators of the Broadway classic Ragtime, this dazzling show transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.
Anastasia features a book by celebrated playwright Terrence McNally and a lush, original score by Stephen Flaherty (music) and Lynn Ahrens (lyrics). Tony Award-winning director Darko Tresnjak directs.
Anastasia was one of my favorite movies to watch repeatedly when I was younger. With songs like “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December,” it’s no wonder this particular animated film won over the hearts of millions so much so that it will now exist as a Broadway musical.
Speaking of which, the production will feature Christy Altomare as Anya, Derek Klena as Dmitry, John Bolton as Vlad, Caroline O’Connor as Lily, Ramin Karimloo as Gleb, and Mary Beth Peil as Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna.
